todd
cobery was born and raised in the boston area.
at an early age, todd developed an interest, and eventually an
obsession, with movies and filmmaking.
one genre of films spoke to todd in a louder voice than the rest,
however. what was this genre?
horror, and lots of it. todd
spent virtually every waking minute watching the latest italian horror
bootleg or trying to find the best consistency for fake blood.
he stayed up all night reading the latest issue of fangoria or
watching dawn of the dead for the umpteenth time.
his life was consumed by horror films.
he would dream of being able to put together visions that held up to
those of his idols
fulci
argento
carpenter
craven
romero.
he had only a shaky home video camera and a group of friends who
shared little interest in his passion, so time and time again his film
projects died quickly after they began.
eventually
todd made his way out to
tropical minneapolis for a change of scenery.
by this time in his life, he was convinced that nobody actually made
films. these filmmakers he read
about were fictitious. it was a
crazy dream that he would never be able to achieve.
after many years off, todd decided to go back to school to get a
practical degree
accounting (literally translated: that which sucks
life). it was during this
particularly low point of todds life that he discovered his school was
offering a 16mm film class. filmmaking
on real film. needless to say,
todd jumped at the chance to take a course on filmmaking from a talented
professional in the industry. the
filmmaking bug hit todd hard. by
this point in his life, horror was not the only type of film that got his
blood pumping
but it was still a favorite.
todd
finally started to do what he had always dreamed of
make films.
he started off by making incoherent garbage, but quickly moved his
way up to blood soaked incoherent zombie garbage.
what was this zombie epic you may ask
the eight minute
tour-de-force the dead wont die.
this black and white short is drenched with hershey syrup blood.
cobery followed dwd up with, you guessed it, the dead wont die
2: the dead still wont die. the
follow up was twice as long, twice as gory, and twice as incoherent.
after the dwd films, todd moved on to short comedies
of the
two-minute variety. he shot
man gets hit in groin by football and breakfast in one day.
the two films went on to win the grand prize and third runner up
respectively at the national projects two-minute film trials held in
minneapolis in october of 2000. todd
has taken his love for no-budget gore to a new level and is currently
experimenting with non horror material with slightly higher production
aspirations, but will always stay true to his exploitation roots.
