"Trickle-Down Wednesdays"
showcases "the other 97% of retro" dance music from the
Carter-Reagan-Bush era. Join DM Juli in the pure indulgence of new romantic,
new wave, synthesized, blue-eyed soul and underground cult delights from the
era of Iran-Contra, supply-side economics, a thousand points of light and
the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Your tip to 80s fashion by coming to the weekly shindig dressed in the style
of those dying Cold War days is highly encouraged. After all, it wouldn't
feel right without the bangle earrings, the pink bowler hats, mohawks,
skinny ties, checkerboard patterns and Miami Vice-aqua Converse high-tops.

cleary
Neil Cleary is a musician and songwriter
who, currently living in New York City has taken up with a burgeoning New
York country/roots-rock scene. Between sharing stages with acts like
Hank III and JJ Cale and a yearlong residency at the East Village bar 9C,
Neil has built a vociferous and dedicated following. His new album Numbers
Add Up was recently released on Doozy Recordings.
Tracing Neil Cleary's musical history can
prove confusing. On the local scene in his hometown of Burlington, VT, Neil
was often found simultaneously as a drummer in rock bands, a guitar &
mandolin player in a traditional contra-dance string band, and a solo
singer/songwriter. Ensuing years included stints on electric guitar for an
Iowa gospel choir, on drums for a blues band in St. Louis, and fronting Hank
Williams' Lonesome Cheatin' Hearts Club Band, his own New York-based tribute
to the country legend. Recent years in New York have found him touring
behind the drums with Brooklyn Elephant
6-ers The Essex Green, and in the studio with Athens, GA bands The Four
Corners and The Sunshine Fix.
Reflecting this eclectic background is
Cleary's 1997 release Made to Feel (Sudden Shame Records) under the name
Stupid Club. With a rotating cast of
friends and bandmates making up the phantom ensemble, Made to Feel features
13 Cleary songs with what the Austin Chronicle called:
"…a surplus of styles that range
from the sappy SoCal sounds of the Mamas & the Papas to the stupid
hopelessness of Paul Westerberg, from the Gear
Daddies' drunken country drip to Sloan's three-chord volatility, from the
occasional quirk of Ed's Redeeming Qualities to the indie brilliance of
Sparklehorse. [Cleary] is the complete package. There is little-to-no ground
that he cannot cover and cover well."
With Numbers Add Up as his first solo
album, Cleary presents less of a grab-bag, featuring the country-rock sounds
of his 9C shows. Recorded in
Brooklyn by Mark Spencer (Jay Farrar, Blood Oranges), the album features
guest performances from Spencer, John Graboff (Laura Cantrell, Beat Rodeo),
Bob Packwood (O Susanna, Mike Younger), Neil Thomas (5 Chinese Brothers,
Jack Grace), Andy Cotton (John Herald, Gordon Stone), and Fiona McBain.
Numbers Add Up could be described as a
breakup album, if you include band breakups and personal breakdowns: With
songs like "Your Next Move" and the anthemic "When All Of Us
Get Famous", Cleary describes the life of the struggling musician with
a bittersweet mix of cynicism and tenderness.
Coupled with songs like "Teenage Aspirations",
"Hometown", and "Girls Who Leave The East for San
Francisco", Numbers Add Up presents a picture of
characters losing their place in life at a critical moment.
"His up-front performances are smart,
engaging, and singular." - No Depression
"Capable and strong work." - BOMB
Magazine
"A Dylan for the geeky music obsessed
cyber-outlaws who've had it with the music business … for the fearless
linear set who've finally admitted to themselves that they will not sleep
with Winona Ryder." - Jim Roll
